Submitted by C., who says: “So I did some research because this seems ridiculous, and of course, there are some inaccuracies (shocker).
 
1. It only weighed 350 pounds, 30 of which was honey from the White House beehive. It is also not all chocolate, just gingerbread dipped in white chocolate.
2. It was made by the White House kitchen, meaning the labor was already paid for and only materials were a cost.
3. The gingerbread house is not for a party but on display for the entire month of December for White House visitors.
4. None of the parties (that I found anyway) are personal parties. Examples include: for Secret Service and families, White House press corps, cabinet and staff, military families, state dinners, etc.

Also I’m really surprised someone didn’t go all Fox-news crazy and say something like, “Of course it’s a WHITE gingerbread instead of a brown one…we all know the Obamas hate whites and want to eat us!””

I went to the Luxist article, which linked to this Curbed article, which says that “the gingerbread house has long been a tradition in the presidential household.”
(And also, “We live in a shelfish society” made me actually LOL)
