I get that for some people becoming pro-choice is difficult because it means accepting that life is not black and white, that people are routinely forced into no win situations, and that they have the right to make the choices they need to make. That everyone has the right to make the choices they need to make. I think a lot of women aren’t ready to openly state that they have the right to make choices about their bodies because it would mean walking out from under the sort of treacherous shelter the patriarchy provides. Saying, “my body; my choice,” means acknowledging that, to a certain extent, you are alone. That your father doesn’t know best. That no one knows better than you. And I get it, that’s scary. But that’s being a goddamn adult. And here’s the other thing, when you are ready to take that step out into the free air and admit to being a living, breathing, autonomous human being with full decision-making capabilities? There is somebody waiting for you. A whole lot of somebodies. We’ve been here all along, fighting for you, and putting our bodies quite literally in the line of fire in many cases so that when you get faced with a hard choice it is truly your own. We’re fighting for you, even if you don’t give a shit about us. So who is really on your side?
